Getting Support
What Is a Health Counselor?
A health counselor helps you build sustainable habits around nutrition, sleep, stress and daily self care. It's a coaching credential, not a medical or clinical one, and understanding that distinction helps you know exactly what kind of support you're getting.
What a Health Counselor Actually Does
A health counselor works with you on the daily patterns that shape how you feel: what you eat, how you sleep, how you handle stress and how you care for yourself in the middle of a full life. Sessions usually focus on identifying what's not working, building small sustainable changes and staying accountable to them over time. A good health counselor also looks at the emotional and behavioral patterns underneath a habit, alongside the habit itself.
The IIN Certification Behind the Title
IIN, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, is one of the most widely recognized health coaching training programs. It certifies practitioners in holistic health and behavior change, covering nutrition theory, coaching methodology and lifestyle factors that affect wellbeing. The certification prepares someone to coach on habits and lifestyle. It does not authorize diagnosing, prescribing or treating a medical condition.
I'm an IIN Certified Health Counselor myself, alongside training as a Trauma Informed Practitioner and Attachment Theory Certified through The Personal Development School. Those three credentials work together in my practice: the health counseling training informs the daily habits and body-based side of the work, and the attachment and trauma training informs the relational and nervous system side of it.
How a Health Counselor Differs From a Therapist or Doctor
A health counselor is not a licensed medical provider and does not diagnose or treat physical or mental health conditions. A doctor treats disease. A licensed therapist diagnoses and treats mental health conditions using clinical modalities. A health counselor works alongside both, focused on the daily habits, routines and patterns that support the medical or clinical care you're already getting, and refers out when a medical or clinical need shows up that's outside the scope of coaching.
Who a Health Counselor Helps
- Someone who wants structure around habits like nutrition, sleep and stress management, without needing a clinical diagnosis or treatment plan.
- Someone already in therapy or medical care who wants additional support applying changes in daily life between appointments.
- Someone who wants the emotional pattern named alongside the habit, since the two are usually connected.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a health counselor do?
A health counselor works with clients on the daily habits, routines and lifestyle patterns that affect wellbeing, things like nutrition, sleep, stress and self care. Is a health counselor a doctor or a therapist?
No. A health counselor is not a licensed medical provider and does not diagnose or treat physical or mental health conditions. A health counselor works alongside medical care and therapy, focused on habits, routines and the emotional patterns that shape daily choices, and refers out when a medical or clinical need is present.
Is a health counselor a certified attachment theory specialist?
Not automatically. Health counseling and attachment theory certification are two separate credentials. Rebecca Lee Wells holds both: IIN Certified Health Counselor through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and Attachment Theory Certified through The Personal Development School, alongside training as a Trauma Informed Practitioner.
When should I see a health counselor instead of a therapist?
A health counselor is a good fit when you want support building sustainable habits around nutrition, stress, sleep and daily self care. A licensed therapist is the right fit for diagnosing or treating a mental health condition, or processing deep clinical trauma. Many people work with both at once.
